The three main types of EVs include:
BEVs: Battery electric vehicles, also called all-electric vehicles, are powered entirely by electricity. No gas is required. Most of the BEVs currently available on the market have lithium batteries. These have a higher power-to-weight ratio, longer driving ranges, and are smaller than other battery types.
PHEVs: Plug-in electric vehicles utilize batteries to power their electric motor. They also have an internal combustion motor that recharges the battery, allowing PHEVs to have wider driving ranges. Plug-in EVs drive electricity from the battery until it’s gone before switching to the ICE.
HEVs: Hybrid electric vehicles, or self-charging hybrids, have both internal combustion and electrical motors. The engine uses electricity which is stored in a battery pack. HEVs cannot be plugged into a charger. Instead, they have an onboard battery pack that is juiced via regenerative braking and the engine.
