3 Common Vehicle Service Myths: Tire Pressure, Brake Fluid & Coolant

When it comes to servicing your vehicle, there are a lot of myths out there. At West Automotive Group, we’re here to help you fight through the auto repair fog and determine the best ways to care for your car! Below we have outlined three common vehicle service myths about your car’s coolant, brake fluid level and tire pressure. Make sure you share these myths with your friends and family so they too can know the truth about these important systems in their automobiles.

Myth #1: Should you inflate your tire pressure to the max pressure rating on your tire?

Your tires should be inflated to the vehicle manufacturers specifications, NOT the max pressure rating listed on the side of your tire. Many people don’t realize that the pressure rating listed on the side of your tire is the MAXIMUM pressure the tire can withstand, not the optimal tire pressure level. Over-inflating your tires can lead to blowouts.

Myth #2: Will topping off low brake fluid fix the problem?

If your car’s brake fluid is low, there is a bigger issue at hand. You need to take your vehicle to a qualified technician for a brake inspection right away. Brake fluid doesn’t get low for no reason, chances are there is a leak or more serious brake issue going on.

Myth #3: Should you replace your coolant every oil change?

No. Coolant lasts up to 2 years or 24,000 miles, and extended coolant lasts even longer. Save your self the money and don’t get your coolant replaces every time you get your oil changed.
