5 Most Common Vehicle Failures

While you never want to be stranded on the side of the road, winter is probably the least desirable time to have this happen. And although there will always be unavoidable, unfortunate events, we’ve compiled a list of the five most common vehicle failures and how you can prevent them!

1. Check Engine Light

An illuminated check engine light can mean a lot of different things - sometimes major, sometimes minor - which is why it’s so important to take your vehicle to a trusted, qualified auto repair shop to get it tested and see what needs to be done.

2. Drivability Issues

Clogged air filters and mass air flow sensors can leave you stuck. There are many signs to warn you about needing a new air filter like unusual engine sounds, the smell of gasoline when starting your vehicle, or lower fuel economy. You can also have your ASE certified technician check it at your next inspection.

3. Overheating

Driving even a little bit when your engine is overheating is serious, and it can get expensive quickly. Hoses and reservoirs should be maintained to stay on top of your cooling system. Replacing a leaky hose is a lot easier (and less expensive) than replacing a broken head gasket.

4. Tires

Seeing the inside corner of your tires can only be done when the car is lifted up, which is why it’s so important to take your vehicle to a repair shop that is going to have qualified technicians inspecting your vehicle. Wear should be even, and keep an eye on your tread. You can use the Penny Test to check your tread, but taking it to a quality auto repair shop is the safest choice.

5. Battery

In cold weather, and anecdotally when you’re running late to something, is when vehicle batteries die most often. Make sure your battery is being tested during an inspection. Your auto repair facility should be able to give you an idea of when you should think about getting a new one before it fails.   All of these common failures will give warning signs before they fail, which is why it is critical to take your vehicle to a quality, AAA-Approved automotive repair facility with ASE Certified Technicians, like West Escondido and West El Cajon Automotive and Transmission for both preventative maintenance and repairs.
